Culture Jammer
1) What aspect do you find most successful and why?
The aspect of my Culture Jammer that I find most successful is the text I used to expose things that American Apparel does in their ads that are disturbing and make me uncomfortable. I think the strongest message I used was talking about how their ads are directed at young girls and how they will think things like this are appropriate and okay.
2) What aspect is the least successful and why?
I think the blurb under the picture is not as successful because it does not stand out as much where as the other text stands out enough that the reader can see it from a distance.
3) If you could redo this again what changes would you make?
I would probably have used one of the more controversial photo's and been more blunt with the sweatshop/human rights remarks because that is something I find really interesting and makes you think.

Reinterpretation of The Umbrellas
The Umbrellas
Allie Smillie
Acrylic on canvas
April 8th 2015
My reinterpretation piece is based on the paining The Umbrellas by Leonid Afremov. The original painting was constructed of oil on canvas, and my version was acrylic, gel medium and modelling paste. In order to make it my own, I chose to change the colour scheme to make it appear more like a night time setting. I used purples and blues mostly, with heavy accents of yellow and red to make the colours pop. I wanted to do something very different and ended up loving this style and technique. I think it will benefit my portfolio to have something like this since it is something that is not the norm. Some troubles I ran into consisted of having to wait for the modelling paste to dry and blending too much. I really love the way the buildings and street lights turned out. I actually really enjoyed the mediums I used to create this piece because they added so much texture and depth to the painting.

Post-Apocalyptic
Post Apocalyptic 3D Imagery – Reflection
Allie Smillie
April 4th 2015
Photoshop
For my post apocalyptic art I chose the red,
yellow/green, blue colour scheme on a black background because I felt that
these colours would suit the content well, since it is a darker palate. I chose
the boy with the hobo satchel to stand out, in order to show hope and a future
in the post apocalypse setting. I wanted him to be one of the main things you
see in the piece because I wanted a shred of hope in a world of despair.
I tried to use a variety of sizes and images to produce a
full piece with lots of dimension and colour. I wanted the 3D to be very
dramatic and pop out a lot which I feel like I was successful with. I wanted my
piece to represent my idea of a rebuilt world, still incorporating structures,
but a demolished environment and things produced from the rubble. Instead of
showing adults fixing everything, I chose to use children since they are the
future and I really wanted to show hope.
Some ideas that changed were the items and sizing I chose
to use. I originally going to do a close up of a structure with smaller detail,
and ended up with more of a scene. I chose to have a blue background over the
black to provide texture and an extra level to add depth.
I made sure when I was creating this piece that it leads
your eye around the page to provide balance and attention to detail. I want the
viewer to really think about what is happening in the image and see it from
different perspectives.

How Is Hero An Art Movie?
1. I think Hero can be considered an art movie, because unlike Hollywood movies, it focuses on artistic shots, and the meaning beyond the story. The main story in hero was analyzed 3 different times, with three different end results, which is a property of an art movie since it is something that is studied and has a far deeper meaning than the first story. It also uses colours and artistic shots to set the tone or mood of the scene and story.
2.The director makes this a movie for everybody by including subtitles and universal principals, like conflict, love, revenge and peace. It has dialogue which makes it much easier to follow for those who have difficulty understanding the 'art movie' aspects of this film, giving it a more story oriented background. It is a fascinating movie all around, with a creative story line to keep all viewers entertained.
3.I liked this movie because there was always a plot twist and it was always not as you expected. The only thing I struggled with was the subtitles, mostly because I find them distracting. Other than that this movie kept me on my toes and was very exciting to watch. It was something I am not used to and it was interesting to see something based on the past in another culture. I also loved the creative shots incorporated in this film.
4. I think Zhang Yimou used colour to emphasize his action sequences because colour shows emotion and makes you feel a certain way as you watch the scene. For example, the red colours made it feel as if Nameless was out for blood, he was angry, supporting his country. The blue provided a calmer approach, he was there with good intent, to keep them alive. The library for instance kept changing because the story and the intent kept changing. Something new would happen based on the colours and that would be how you truly understood the separate stories.

Brainstorming - 3D
Brainstorming – Post-Apocalyptic 3D Imagery
1.
What
do you think the end of the world will look like? How do you think this
particular disaster will affect the physical world?
I think the end of the world will be due to
the earth’s plates shifting too much, resulting in flood, cracking ground,
explosion, fire and all sorts of things that a simple unexplained, shift in the
earth could cause to add complexity to the end of the world. There would be
charred buildings, random items strewn across the land as well as any people in
my assignment will wear gas masks due to all the harmful things in the air.
2.
What
particular aspect do you want to focus on?
I want to focus on the creativity
it would take to rebuild their homes using what is left in the world, as well
as people creating business and currency, trades etc.
3.
What
10 things in particular do you want to display survived?
-People
-Parts of structures – barns, homes
-A teddy bear – for a child
-Some canned goods – dented
-Cars
-Oil-drums – fire
-Parts of trees – stumps
-A Child – to show a future
-Boats
-Scraps – wood, metal
4.
What
will serve as a symbol of hope?
I want to incorporate a child in the
recreated world because that symbolizes hope for a future.
5.
What
do you think of T&T’s work? What do you think makes it appealing to people?
I personally think it resembles animation
and I love the concept but the style isn’t really my thing. I prefer more range
in colour. I think it is appealing to people because it is simplistic and shows
perspective. People are very into minimalism these days (myself included) and
this really displays a minimalist depiction of a post-apocalyptic world.
